Class for advanced photo printing brings photography to life

""

In an upper-division photography class, students learn advanced photo printing on large canvas, where they develop their ability to bring photographs to life. This returning course, taught by associate professor Brent Bergherm, covers the entire printing process: everything from printing, to varnishing and matting, to mounting and preparing for display.

Bergherm believes print is “the ultimate manifestation of a fine photograph,” and knowing how to expertly craft these prints is a key skill for student photographers. His class gives students a solid understanding of color management, ensuring that colors are accurately reproduced in order to preserve the full intent and impact of the image. He says the degree to which the class covers this skill is valuable in preparing students for work in industry; all sorts of machinery is used to reproduce images, and “if they aren’t careful, colors can go wonky in a flash.”

Senior forensic psychology major, Kalissa Krause, is one of six students in the class this quarter. She is taking it for her minor in photography, but said that “photography is a creative outlet for me and learning more about it, and how to print properly on a larger scale, is important.”
